Compassionate dental extraction in Glenn Mills, PA

If you have tooth pain, you need treatment immediately. While no one wants to lose a tooth, sometimes the only way to protect your oral health is with a tooth extraction. Dr. Nair can help patients in Glenn Mills, PA, with wisdom teeth removal and other dental extraction procedures. Star Care Dental is committed to providing a low-stress treatment with minimal discomfort for all of our patients.

What to expect during a dental extraction

The most common reason a patient needs a tooth extraction is because of problems with their wisdom teeth. However, sometimes severe tooth decay or infections require removing the teeth to prevent further complications. Patients with dental crowding may also need an extraction before orthodontic treatments.

During a simple extraction, Dr. Nair will numb the treatment area so you can be comfortable during the procedure. She will then use a dental elevator to loosen your tooth and remove it using forceps. Then, she’ll place gauze on the extraction site and have you bite down to aid with clotting. You’ll leave the gauze in place for 3-4 hours and change it if it soaks through with blood.

Impacted or damaged teeth may require surgical extraction. Dr. Nair will need to cut into your gum tissues to get at the tooth root, and in some cases, may need to cut around the bone. Typically, patients will receive IV anesthesia to help them relax, although some patients may prefer general anesthesia so they can sleep through the procedure.

At-home care

After your extraction, you will need to give your mouth time to heal. Take at least 24 hours to rest and use over-the-counter pain relievers to help with discomfort. Stick to a soft diet for a few days and avoid the extraction site when brushing and flossing. Dr. Nair will go over other ways to reduce inflammation, such as saltwater rinses, to help your mouth stay clean and heal properly.

Unless it’s your wisdom teeth, you will need to replace missing teeth after your tooth extraction. Dental implants are often the best choice, but some patients may prefer partial dentures or bridges. Dr. Nair will go over your treatment options and help you understand how missing teeth can affect your oral health. Patients in Glen Mills and surrounding cities such as Aston or Chester should contact Star Care Dental at (610) 569-0509 for a consultation.
