If you are experiencing chronic headaches, pain in the neck or shoulders, or dizziness, these could all be caused by temporomandibular disorder. Dr. Hema Nair and the team at Star Care Dental are here to provide relief. Here are some tips you can do at home to help ease any discomfort caused by TMJ pain.
Pain caused by your TMJ reacts well to both hot and cold, so utilizing both to relieve pain is a way to ease your discomfort from home. Taking a warm, damp washcloth and applying it to the painful area for a few minutes is an easy way to utilize heat. For an ice treatment, you can take a washcloth and wrap ice with it. You can also place ice in a Ziploc bag, then apply the ice adjacent to the painful area of your face for around five minutes. Do this for five minutes at a time with a few minutes in between; a bag of frozen vegetables, such as peas, is a great alternative to ice.
Because TMJ discomfort can be triggered by symptoms brought on by stress, such as chronic jaw clenching or teeth grinding, meditation can be a great way to relieve these symptoms. Taking deep, slow breaths and practicing breathing techniques that have you draw in large, deep, and slow breaths via your diaphragm can help relieve yourself of the stress your day brings.
Anti-inflammatory drugs that can be bought over the counter will help with the pain brought on by inflammation and can be purchased with a doctor’s prescription.
These are just a few easy steps you can take at home to relieve discomfort brought on by TMJ disorder. While these can all help temporarily, you will still want to seek assistance from a medical or dental professional to address the underlying symptoms. Dr. Hema Nair is here to help you.
