Dental Implants in Glen Mills, PA
The loss of permanent teeth is difficult and embarrassing to cope with, not to mention the overwhelming process of deciding on tooth replacement options. At Star Care Dental, we work with our patients in the Glen Mills, Aston, Chester, and Chadds Ford area to determine which solution is best for his or her unique needs. In many cases, dental implants are chosen because they are the closest option to natural teeth. Below, we will look at dental implants and how they can restore functionality, appearance, and health to your smile.
What are dental implants?
Each tooth is made up of two main parts: the crown and the root. The crown is the portion of the tooth that you see above the gumline and the root is what holds your tooth in place in the bone. Dental implants are screw-like posts that are placed into the jawbone to replace the missing root. Over time, the bone and implant fuse together to form the foundation for the final restoration. Dental implants can be used to support a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.
Here are some of the benefits of dental implants:
- Improved functionality – Dental implants are held securely in place in the bone which makes them a highly functional restoration. Once in place, you don’t have to worry about dental implants moving around or making it difficult to eat and speak.
- Longevity – With good oral hygiene and dental care, dental implants can last you the rest of your life.
- Improved oral health – Without a tooth root, the jawbone structure will naturally degrade over time. Dental implants prevent this bone loss which protects other teeth from becoming loose.
- Improved appearance – Replacing missing teeth with dental implants helps support your mouth and cheeks to prevent you from appearing older than you are.

The dental implant process
Having dental implants placed is a commitment that requires multiple visits over the course of several months. In the end, it is worth it to have a restoration in place that you know will last a lifetime.
The first step is a consultation to determine if dental implants are the right solution for your needs. Most individuals can be a candidate for dental implants, although some may require bone grafting prior to the procedure.
Next, the dental implant or implants are placed into the jawbone and left there to heal. This can take anywhere from three to six months. After that, you will return to have an abutment, or connector attached to the implant. The abutment is what holds the final restoration in place. Once the area has healed, we can either attach a dental crown, bridge, or dentures to the implant or implants.
